CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
AWARD OF 1 (ONE) RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AT MAIA UNIVERSITY
BI_AISPO_2025-06

A call is now open for the award of one Research Fellowship (BI), hereinafter referred to as BI or Research Fellowship, under the conditions set out below and pursuant to the Research Fellowship Holder Statute.

1. FUNDING
The Research Fellowship is funded by the FCT project AISPO – Artificial Intelligence for Optimizing Swimming Pool Operations (Ref. 2024.07577.IACDC).
Municipal swimming pools present high operational costs due to their energy demands, chemical maintenance requirements, and regulatory obligations. The AISPO project aims to reduce these operational costs while maintaining or improving user satisfaction.

2. SCIENTIFIC AREA
Computer Science and Information Science.

3. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
3.1. The following candidates are eligible to apply:
a. Nationals or citizens of other Member States of the European Union;
b. Citizens of third countries;
c. Stateless individuals;
d. Citizens with political refugee status.

3.2. Candidates who meet the above and also meet one of the following criteria are eligible:
a. Enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or Information Science, or conducting research within these areas;
b. Holder of a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Information Science and currently enrolled in a non-degree granting course (CNCG);
c. Enrolled in a Master's program in Computer Science or Information Science.

3.3. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:
a. Proficiency in English (to be proven by certificates/diplomas, English-written work/articles, or the ability to hold a conversation in English);
b. Previous research experience in areas relevant to the work plan (e.g., optimization, operations research, machine learning, or related topics);
c. Strong interest and alignment of profile with the scientific research objectives of the AISPO Project (optimization techniques, machine learning, predictive models, recommendation systems, and decision-support systems).

4. WORK PLAN
The fellow will carry out the following activities:
a. Systematic literature review on optimization and predictive modeling;
b. Development of a model to represent swimming pools;
c. Collection, analysis, and processing of historical data from the swimming pools;
d. Data normalization, handling of missing data, feature selection, algorithm selection, performance analysis, parameter tuning;
e. Participation in team meetings and preparation of reports;
f. Writing of scientific articles;
g. Participation in scientific dissemination activities related to the results.

5. FELLOWSHIP DURATION
The fellowship will be awarded on an exclusive basis for a period of seven (7) months, expected to start on July 1, 2025.

8. PLACE OF WORK DEVELOPMENT
The work will be carried out at the facilities of LIACC – Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, either at the University of Porto or the University of Maia, under the scientific supervision of Professor Luís Paulo Reis, the principal investigator of this project. However, this does not preclude the possibility of appointing other Scientific Supervisors and possible Co-supervisors from LIACC, if necessary to meet the objectives of the Work Plan and the Project.

6. COMPONENTS, METHOD, AND PERIODICITY OF FELLOWSHIP PAYMENT
6.1. For candidates applying under points a. and b. of section 3.2, the monthly stipend is €1,309.64. For candidates under point c., the monthly stipend is €1,040.98, according to the stipend table for fellowships directly funded by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (link ).
6.2. The fellowship is paid monthly via bank transfer.
6.3. All fellows benefit from personal accident insurance related to their research activities, covered by the FCT.
6.4. All fellows who are not covered by any social protection scheme may ensure their right to social security by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme, under the terms of the Portuguese Social Security Contributions Code. The FCT covers the contributions within the terms and limits set out in Article 10 of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute (EBI).

7. APPLICABLE LEGISLATION AND REGULATIONS
This call is governed by this Notice of Opening, the FCT Research Fellowship Regulation, approved by Regulation No. 950/2019, published in the 2nd Series of the Official Gazette on 16 December 2019, the Research Fellowship Holder Statute approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current version, and all other applicable national and EU legislation.

Selection process

9. SELECTION METHODS
9.1. The evaluation of applications will be carried out through Curricular Assessment (60%) and an Interview (40%). Candidates will be scored based on the following criteria.
9.2. The Curricular Assessment (60%), based on the documents submitted with the application, considers:
a. The candidate’s academic qualifications as per section 3.2 (40%):

20 points for case a (PhD student),

15 points for case b (Master’s degree + non-degree program),

10 points for case c (Master’s student).
b. The candidate’s professional background, if applicable (20%).
c. The motivation letter, which must describe the candidate’s academic and/or professional trajectory (40%).

9.3. The score obtained in the Curricular Assessment will be expressed on a numeric scale from 0 to 20, with up to two decimal places. The candidate’s final score is the average of the scores given by each jury member.
9.4. The Interview (40%) evaluates:
a. The motivation of the candidate (15%).
b. A global assessment of competencies considered important for the development of the work plan and profile suitability (85%).
9.5. The score obtained in the Interview will also be expressed on a numeric scale from 0 to 20, with up to two decimal places. The candidate’s final score is the average of the scores given by each jury member.
9.6. Based on the evaluations, the jury will prepare a ranking list of the candidates, with final scores expressed on a scale from 0 to 20, up to two decimal places. In the case of a tie, the President of the jury has the casting vote.
9.7. The jury reserves the right not to select any candidate if it considers that none meet the required profile.

10. COMPOSITION OF THE SELECTION JURY

11. APPLICATION DEADLINE AND SUBMISSION METHOD
11.1. The call is open from June 4 to June 18, 2025.
11.2. Applications must be submitted via email to projetos@maieutica.pt, with CC to conselhogestao@umaia.pt, indicating the subject line:
Bolsa de Investigação BI_AISPO_2025-06.
11.3. Applications must include the following documents:
a. Proof of academic degrees previously obtained by the candidate;
b. Curriculum vitae;
c. Motivation letter addressed to the jury members, describing the candidate's academic and/or professional background, the reasons for applying, and the relevance to the work plan described in section 4 of this notice;
d. A declaration signed under honour commitment by the candidate stating that they will carry out the work plan on an exclusive basis;
e. Other supporting documents deemed relevant.
11.4.Eligible candidates will be interviewed online on June 20, 2025, between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

12. FELLOWSHIP GRANTING REQUIREMENTS
12.1. The research fellowship contracts are managed in accordance with FCT regulations. The following documents must be submitted for the fellowship to be contracted:
a. Copy of documents confirming civil, tax, and, where applicable, social security identification numbers;
b. Copy of academic degree certificates;
c. Copy of proof of enrollment/attendance in a doctoral or master’s program as outlined in 3.2;
d. Supervisor’s declaration accepting responsibility for the supervision of the work plan, as per Article 5-A of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute (template provided by FCT);
e. Work plan to be carried out.
12.2. The award of the fellowship is also subject to:
a. Full compliance with the requirements set out in this notice;
b. Positive evaluation of the application in accordance with this notice;
c. Absence of any unjustified non-compliance by the candidate in any previous research fellowship funded (directly or indirectly) by FCT.
12.3. Failure to submit any required documentation within the deadline specified in the conditional award notification will result in forfeiture of the award and closure of the process.

13. RESULTS ANNOUNCEMENT / NOTIFICATION METHOD
13.1. The evaluation results will be published via a ranking list based on the final score, posted on the University of Maia’s website (www.umaia.pt ) within a maximum of 10 working days after the application deadline. Candidates will also be notified of the draft decision by email and will have 10 working days to respond during the prior hearing phase. If no responses are received, the decision becomes final.
13.2. If there are responses, the final decision will be notified within 10 working days.
13.3. Candidates may submit a complaint within 10 working days of the final decision or lodge an appeal to the highest executive body of the funding entity within 30 working days, as per Article 12 of the FCT Research Fellowship Regulations.
