The Polytechnic of Leiria is now opening applications for 1 (one) research fellowship (BI) within the project "AlgaeTech - development of biopolymers from marine resources for sustainable solutions" with operation code COMPETE2030-FEDER-01449900, supported by the COMPETE2030 program, PORTUGAL2030, co‐financed by the European Union.
Project Details
- SCIENTIFIC AREA: Materials and Biology.
- RECIPIENTS: Graduates in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering or related areas who are master's students in the same fields or who are enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree in association with a Research Unit (UI).
- DURATION: 12 months, eventually renewable until the end of the project or the maximum duration for this research fellowship type. The fellowship is due to start in 2026/06.
- WORK PLAN: Development of biopolymer material test specimens.
- WORKPLACE AND SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION: The work will be developed at the Centre for Rapid and Sustained Product Development from the Polytechnic of Leiria (CDRSP-PLeiria), under the supervision of PhD Professor Rui Miguel Barreiros Rúben.
- GRANT FINANCIAL COMPONENTS: Monthly maintenance subsidy of €1.090,98. The amount is based on the FCT, I.P. regulations. To this amount is added the monthly contribution for Social Security, if applicable, in accordance with the Statute of Research Fellows. The scholarship holder will benefit from Personal Accident Insurance during the course of the scholarship.
- PAYMENT: The maintenance stipend will be processed monthly through bank transfer to the account identified by the research fellow.
- ACTIVITY SCHEME: Exclusivity, according to the applicable legislation.
- EVALUATION PANEL: The jury responsible for evaluation will be constituted by PhD Professors Rui Miguel Barreiros Rúben (president), Milena Maria Nogueira Vieira and Pedro José da Silva Carreira (effective members); Marcelo Rudolfo Calvete Gaspar and Jorge Miguel Peralta Siopa (substitute members).

Selection and Evaluation Criteria
The evaluation will be carried out through curriculum analysis and possible interview, focusing on the merit of the candidate. Candidates will be weighted according to the following criteria, and only those with a final classification of at least 9.5 will be selected.
1. Academic Qualification (AQ) (20%): final grade of bachelor.
2. Professional/Academic Experience (PAE) (30%):
- Excellent professional/academic experience – 20 values.
- Very good professional/academic experience – 17 values.
- Good professional/academic experience – 14 values.Enough professional/academic experience – 10 values.
- Insufficient professional/academic experience – 2 values.
- No mention of professional/academic practice – 0 values.
3. Specific knowledge (SK) (50%): Materials characterization (microCT, SEM, FTIR, DSC, TGA) and Computational Mechanics analyses.
- Excellent knowledge – 20 points.
- High knowledge – 15 points.
- Medium knowledge – 10 points.
- Low level of knowledge – 5 points.
- No knowledge – 0 points.
Final grade FG = AQ×0.2 + PAE×0.3 + SK×0.5. If the jury decides by reasoned deliberation, the three first classified in the curriculum analysis will be invited for an interview (INT). The final grade after interview will be FG×0.8 + INT×0.2. Candidates with a score below 9.5 will be excluded.
