Offer Description
A call is open for the award of a Research Initiation Scholarship for undergraduate students within the scope of the DTwin-SPIM project, with financial support from FCT/MCTES, under the following conditions:
Scientific area
: Bachelor's Degree in Systems Engineering.
Work plan:
Model-based digital twins supported by physics-informed machine learning for multiphysics modeling.
1. Grant duration and regime:
Duration of 6 months, starting in april ****, potentially renewable up to the extent permitted by the relevant regulations .
The granting of the scholarships does not generate or entitle a legal-labor relationship, it is exercised under an exclusive dedication regime, and the Scholarship holder is granted the Scholarship Holder Status, in accordance with the Regulation for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., both in their current wording.
2. Activity scope:
This project investigates and evaluates innovative model updating techniques aimed at improving the reliability of numerical simulations and digital twins.
By using advanced machine learning methods, such as Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) and Variational Physics-Informed Neural Networks (vPINNs), the project seeks to enable more accurate calibration and updating of model-based digital twins.
These methodologies integrate observed data with simulation models developed during the design phases, reducing the discrepancy between theoretical predictions and the actual observed behavior.
The objective is to develop model-based artificial neural network tools that combine the strengths of traditional numerical simulations with data-driven machine learning approaches.
By incorporating PINNs and vPINNs, the aim is to create robust numerical tools capable of simulating and predicting structural phenomena under different operating conditions.
These tools are intended to enhance predictive capabilities and support decision-making processes throughout the product life cycle in sectors such as energy, aeronautics, and automotive.
3. Scientific supervision:
Dr. Jorge Belinha. The work will be carried out in INEGI or FEUP facilities in Porto.
4. Academic Qualifications and Candidate Profile:
ii.
Basic knowledge of Python
iii.
Basic CAD modeling skills acquired during academic training
iv.
Introductory familiarity with numerical simulation (e.g., finite element method and meshless methods)
v. Teamwork and collaboration skills
vi.
Responsibility and autonomy to perform the required tasks
vii.
Proficiency in Portuguese and English, both written and spoken
5.
Academic degrees obtained in foreign countries shall be registered by a Portuguese institution, according to the DL *******, of August 16th, and the Ordinance nr. *******, of January 25th.

Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law No. ******* of August 18th, in the current wording published by Decree-Law No. ******** of August 28; Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force (Regulation No. ********** of 16 December ).
8. Evaluation criteria:
This evaluation results in the selection of applications that go on to the interview stage.
The final evaluation is calculated based on a weight of 40% of the CV and 60% of the interview.
The selection criteria are as follows: academic background, qualifications, adequacy between the candidate's profile and the objectives of the grant, motivation and relevant experience for the project in question, according to the admission requirements described above.
The jury reserves the right not to fill the position if there are no candidates that meet the requirements.
If the candidate placed 1st does not accept the scholarship or withdraws from the scholarship during the respective work program, the candidate placed 2nd may be invited to accept the scholarship.
This procedure may be repeated in subsequent cases of non-acceptance or withdrawal, according to the decision of the scientific supervisor, respecting the order of the list contained in the minutes of the selection process.
9. Composition of the evaluation panel:
10. Publication/notification of results:
Applications must include the following documents:
motivation letter, stating the adequacy of the curriculum to the position;
curriculum vitae, in which the candidate's academic background must be clear in the areas referred to in item 4 of this call for applications;
