Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tool and Die Maker to join our precision manufacturing team at our offices situated in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 7 years of experience in tool and die making, with expertise in designing and fabricating tools, fixtures, dies, and molds. Fluency in both English and Portuguese is required to ensure effective communication within our diverse team and with international clients. This role demands proficiency in CAM software, particularly Fusion 360 CAM, and hands-on experience operating advanced machinery in a machine tool room, including EDM, lathes, CNC mills (4/5-axis), and other milling equipment. The candidate should be detail-oriented, innovative, and capable of delivering high-quality, precision-crafted solutions in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

The Job Role is focused on the following:

* Design and Development:
Create and refine designs for tools, fixtured, dies, and molds using CAD/CAM software, with a focus on precision and functionality to meet project specifications.
* Tool Fabrication:
Manufacture, assemble, and test custom tools, dies, molds, and fixtures to support production processes, ensuring adherence to tight tolerances and quality standards.
* CAM Programming:
Utilise Fusion 360 CAM and other CAM software to develop efficient toolpaths for CNC machining, optimising production workflows and minimising waste.
* Machine Operation:
Operate and maintain a variety of machine tools, including EDM, CNC mills (4/5 – axis), lathes, and manual mills, to product complex components with high precision.
* Quality Control:
Inspect finished tools and components using precision measurement tools (e.g. micrometres, callipers, CMM) to ensure compliance with design specifications and industry standards.
* Problem Solving:
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to tool performance, machine setup, and production processes, implementing corrective actions to maintain efficiency.
* Collaboration:
Work closely with engineering, production, and quality assurance teams to ensure seamless integration of tools and dies into manufacturing processes.
* Documentation:
Maintain detailed records of designs, machining processes, and maintenance activities, ensuring traceability and compliance with company standards.
* Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities to improve tool designs, manufacturing processes, and workflow efficiency, contributing to overall operational excellence.

Competencies

Key requirements include:

* Language Proficiency:
Fluency in English and Portuguese (written and verbal) to facilitate clear communication with team members and international stakeholders.
* Technical Skills:
* Strong design ability with expertise in CAD software (e.g. Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or similar).
* Proficiency in CAM software, particularly Fusion 360 CAM for generating precise toolpaths and programming CNC machines.
* Extensive experience operating machine tools, including EDM, CNC mills (4/5 – axis), lathes and manual mills, with a focus on precision machining
* Technical Knowledge:
In-depth understanding of metallurgy, tolerances, and material properties to ensure optimal tool performance and durability.
* Problem-Solving Skills:
Ability to analyse complex technical challenges and develop innovative solutions to meet production requirements.
* Attention to Detail:
Exceptional precision and commitment to producing high quality work within tight tolerances.
* Certifications:
Relevant certifications (e.g. journeyman tool and die maker, CNC programming, or CAD/CAM training) are highly desirable.
* Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand for extended periods, lift moderate weights, and work in a machine shop environment with exposure to noise and machinery.
* Teamwork:
Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross functional teams and contribute to a positive work environment.
* Adaptability:
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while managing multiple projects and priorities.

Experience

The role requires:

* Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience as a Tool and Die Maker in a precision manufacturing environment.
* Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing or laser cutting, to component traditional tool and die making.
* Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies to drive process.
* Familiarity with industry standards, such as ISO 9001, for quality management in manufacturing.
* Experience mentoring or training junior machinists or apprentices to support team development.

Work Environment

* Full-time position in a machine shop or manufacturing facility situated at Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal.
* May require occasional overtime to meet project deadlines.
* Adherence to safety protocols and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
