CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 1 (ONE) RESEARCH GRANT (BI), WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE PROJECT “IGNIT-IMPROVING RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSES OF RURAL FIRE IGNITIONS TO INFORM EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONS” (REF. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00910000), ONGOING AT THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FLUP)
A call is now open for the award of 1 (one) Research Grant (BI), for graduates enrolled in a master's degree and/or enrolled in a non-degree course, to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project ‘IGNIT - Improving research into the causes of rural fire ignitions to inform effective management solutions’ (Ref. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00910000), co-financed by FCT, I. P., COMPETE2030, Portugal 2030 and the European Union., underway at the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, under the following conditions:
1. Research area/s :Geography, GIS, Statistics, Engineering and related areas
2. Admission requirements:
To apply for the researchstudentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:
* Graduates in Geographic Information Systems or related areas1;
* Be a student enrolled in a master's degree programme in the area of Geographic Information Systems, Industrial Engineering and Management, Statistics or related areas, and/or in a non-degree course integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units - a requirement to be duly proven at the time of recruitment2;
3. Preferred requirements:
* Advanced mastery of GIS tools;
* Skills in analyzing and processing satellite images and working with Google Earth Engine;
* Knowledge of Python and R;
* Knowledge and experience in the application of quantitative analysis techniques;
* Proficiency in English (fluent level) – to be assessed during interview.
4. Work plan:
4.1. The main tasks to be performed within the scope of the scholarship will be:
* Spatial analysis and visualization of geospatial data;
* Analysis of quantitative data;
* Participate in the literature review;
* Participate in the writing of scientific and technical texts;
* Participate in the organization of scientific events.
4.2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the scholarship contracts, the scholarship may continue as long as the activities foreseen in the work plan are not concluded and under the terms specifically provided for in the opening notice and in the contract, in accordance with paragraph 6 of article 10 of the Regulation. (Only applicable if the selected candidate is enrolled in a Doctoral Program)
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2.ª Série, n. 43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.
6. Workplace:
The work plan will be developed at the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning, Department of Geography of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and/or other locations necessary for execution, undertheguidancescientific of Professor Doctor Fantina Maria Santos Tedim,from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto.
7. Duration:
The BI will be for a period of 6 (six) months, on an exclusive dedication basis, possibly renewable after a positive evaluation, up to the limit of the period of execution of the work plan or funding, and in no case for a period of more than two years, when the scholarship has been awarded to a student enrolled in a master's programme, under the terms of Article 10(3) of the Regulation.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount :
8.1. The value of the monthly grant maintenance allowance corresponds to €1,040.98, as per Annex I of the Regulation.
8.2. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the scholarship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.
9. Evaluation methods:
9.1. The following selection methods are used:curriculum evaluation (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese ) with a weighting of 60% and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (ENT) with a weighting of 40%, which will only take place when the Jury considers that the (AC) does not clarify, in the intended way, the real skills of the candidates or distinguish which candidate is best suited to the position and functions to be performed. If there is an interview, the 3 (three) candidates best classified in the (AC) will be interviewed.
9.2.Each member of the Jury evaluates the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. The criteria and weighting factors for the curricular evaluation (AC) are:
* Arithmetic mean of academic grades (0 to 4 points);
* Scientific performance in the areas (and subareas) for which the competition is open (0 to 3 points);
* Skills in spatial analysis (of0to9points);
* Quantitative analysis skills (0 to 4points).
9.4. Candidates who have received an assessment equal to or lower than 13 points will be excluded at the AC stage.
9.5. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should it be held:
* Demonstration of your skills in spatial analysis (0 to 8 points);
* Demonstration of your skills in quantitative analysis (0to5points);
* Knowledge about the subject of fires (0 to 2points);
* Proficiency in English (fluent level)- (0 to 5 points).
9.6. Candidates may request the President of the Jury to authorize their interview to be conducted by videoconference, giving reasons for this.
9.7. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
9.8. The Final Classification (CF) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0.60AC) + (0.40ENT).
9.9. Candidates who have received an assessment of 13 points or less in the CF will be excluded from the competition.
9.10. This competition is exclusively intended to fill the indicated vacancy. In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they have the profile indicated for carrying out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the vacancy to the competition.

11. Submission of applications:
11.1. Applications must be submitted until 28 July 2025 (local time - Lisbon).
11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
Candidate's curriculum vitae, including: identification; academic background; professional experience;
* Motivation letter, indicating availability to start the work plan;
* Copy of the certificate(s) of the required qualificationsand recognition of degree if applicable
* Proof of enrollment in a study cycle or course that does not award an academic degree or a declaration of honor certifying that you meet the enrollment conditions and that you will present proof of enrollment until the time of hiring;
* Declaration of eligibility (attached).
* Documents proving the preferential conditions listed in point 3 of this Notice.

11.4.Candidates may also attach any other documents they consider relevant to assess their merits.
11.5.Failure to comply with the deadline for submitting the application, failure to submit or submission after the deadline of the documents referred to in points a) to d) of paragraph 11.3 will result in the exclusion of the application.
11.6. Documents may be included in compressed folders (zip, rar, 7z), but the system limit for uploads must be taken into account, which is set at a maximum of 720 MB per file or compressed folder. Each application may submit several files or compressed folders, each with a limit of 720 MB, with no limit on the total number of files/compressed folders submitted.
11.7. For the purposes of evaluating applications, any documents that can be accessed via links will not be considered, with the exception of those that refer to publications with DOI.
11.8. The documents mentioned in point 11.3. must be submitted, preferably, in a non-editable format.
11.9. The Jury may, whenever it deems necessary, ask candidates to submit documents supplementing the facts referred to in the submitted CV, setting a deadline for this purpose, under the following terms:
* the aforementioned documentation is not intended to present elements not referenced in the curriculum vitae, nor to attach missing documents required in this Notice;
* All competitors are informed that additional documentation has been requested.
12. False statements:
False statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.
13. Form of publication/notification of results:
13.1. Candidates will be notified of the minutes relating to the evaluation phase/s of their applications, which will be sent to them by email, to the address provided for this purpose, with a receipt for notification of delivery.
13.2. Notifications are made by email, in accordance with articles 112, paragraph 1, letter c) and 113, paragraph 5, of the CPA.
13.3. Under the terms of article 121 et seq. of the CPA, after being notified, candidates have 10 working days to respond in writing.
14. Booking list:
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list, which may be used in the event of the withdrawal of the candidate ranked first. The highest authority of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. The use of this reserve list may occur for a maximum period of 12 (twelve) months from the date of publication of this Notice.
