We’re looking for a Finance Specialist (Controller) to join our team in Lisbon — someone analytical, detail-oriented, and eager to take ownership of day-to-day financial control across our educational projects.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
You will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial forecasts, monitoring expenses, and producing clear reports to help keep our operations on track. You’ll work directly in Excel and Power BI, coordinating closely with budget owners and the broader finance team. This is a hands-on opportunity ideal for someone at an early stage in their finance career who’s keen to grow by engaging with the day-to-day realities of budgeting, financial control, and collaborative financial operations — all within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Expense Monitoring & Approval: Review and approve expenses, ensuring they are complete, well-justified, and correctly classified.
* Budget Control & Forecasting: Maintain up-to-date forecasts of revenues and expenses for all projects, based on real-time data and regular check-ins with budget owners.
* Reporting: Produce monthly execution reports per cost center and per entity, comparing actuals vs. forecast. Generate ad-hoc reports and performance summaries for programs and events as needed.
* Collaboration with Cost Center Owners: Hold periodic meetings with internal teams to review budget execution, gather new inputs, and support them in understanding their financial performance.
* Financial Analysis Support: Support the finance leadership team with analyses for board meetings, donor updates, and other stakeholders
* Subscriptions & Ongoing Commitments: Act as the go-to person for managing recurring financial commitments such as software subscriptions — keeping them organized and under control.
* Payroll Review Support: Assist with the monthly payroll process, reviewing allocation of hours and tracking extra time worked to ensure accuracy in cost distribution.
* HR Collaboration: Support the HR team with cost calculations for new hires, salary reviews, or contract adjustments.
* Budget Cycle Participation: Contribute to the annual budget planning by preparing templates, collecting inputs, and organizing data.
WHAT YOU BRING:
* Around 2 years of experience in finance, budgeting, or financial control
* Strong Excel skills — including working with formulas, pivot tables, and data validation
* Experience with Power BI or other reporting tools is a plus
* Solid understanding of financial workflows, and a willingness to improve them
* Attention to detail and a hands-on mindset — you’ll be in the numbers every day
* Clear communicator with the ability to work across teams
* Fluency in Portuguese and working proficiency in English
