Backend Engineer – HealthTech – Remote (Portugal) – Up to €65,000 + benefits – Python / Rust / TypeScript
Explore Group has partnered exclusively with a fast-scaling, product-led HealthTech company to support the hire of a Backend Engineer. The business is driving innovation across the healthcare and life sciences space, building platforms that enable advanced data analysis, experimentation, and optimisation in areas such as personalised medicine and next-generation therapies.
The Role
You will play a key role in designing and building backend systems that power complex, data-driven applications, working closely with cross-functional teams across product, frontend, and machine learning.
Key responsibilities:
* Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs
* Develop well-structured, production-ready RESTful APIs
* Collaborate with Product, Frontend, and ML teams to deliver integrated solutions
* Apply Domain Driven Design and clean architecture principles
* Contribute to cloud-native deployments in Kubernetes environments
* Support system scalability, reliability, and performance optimisation
* Participate in code reviews and promote engineering best practices
* Contribute to platform security through secure coding practices
Requirements
* 3–5 years' experience in backend or full-stack development
* Strong experience with at least one of: Python, Rust, or TypeScript (Node.Js)
* Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and microservices
* Experience with databases such as SQL, MongoDB, or Redis
* Understanding of software architecture patterns (DDD, clean architecture)
* Strong collaboration and communication skills
Nice to have:
* Experience working in HealthTech, Life Sciences, or other regulated industries
* Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud environments (Azure preferred)
* Exposure to data-intensive or scientific platforms
* Experience working in cross-functional teams with ML or data engineers
