This role is responsible for the reliability, performance, scalability, and day-to-day stewardship of Cassandra environments supporting business-critical applications. The position also requires hands-on partnership with engineering teams to design data models and query patterns that fit Cassandra's distributed architecture.Responsibilities· Own administration, maintenance, and operational support of production Cassandra clusters.· Monitor cluster health, capacity, performance, repair status, compaction, and node stability.· Plan and execute upgrades, patching, scaling events, backups, restores, and disaster recovery procedures.· Troubleshoot production incidents involving latency, timeouts, failed nodes, replication issues, and uneven load distribution.· Tune Cassandra configuration for performance, durability, and operational stability.· Lead data modeling and schema design for new services and application features.· Review application access patterns and translate them into Cassandra-friendly table designs.· Identify and remediate anti-patterns such as hot partitions, large partitions, inefficient queries, and misuse of batches.· Advise developers on partition key design, clustering strategy, consistency levels, TTL usage, and query tradeoffs.· Establish and improve operational runbooks, observability, alerting, and capacity planning practices.· Partner with platform, infrastructure, and application teams on secure and reliable production deployments.Required Qualifications· Strong hands-on experience administering Apache Cassandra in production environments.· Proven experience supporting high-availability, distributed databases at scale.· Deep understanding of Cassandra internals, including replication, consistency, compaction, repair, tombstones, and partitioning.· Strong expertise in Cassandra data modeling and query-driven schema design.· Experience diagnosing and resolving performance issues in live production systems.· Experience with backup and restore strategies, disaster recovery, and operational readiness.· Strong Linux systems knowledge and comfort working in cloud or hybrid infrastructure environments.· Experience with monitoring and observability tools for distributed systems.· Ability to work closely with software engineers and influence design decisions early.· Strong written and verbal communication skills.Preferred Qualifications· Experience with multi-datacenter Cassandra deployments.· Experience with Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and automation tooling.· Familiarity with JVM tuning as it relates to Cassandra operations.· Experience supporting Cassandra workloads for microservices and event-driven platforms.· Knowledge of security controls including encryption, access control, and audit requirements.· Experience with managed Cassandra offerings as well as self-managed clusters.
