First Point Group is recruiting for anOTN Design Engineer (Design & Planning)on behalf of a leading telecommunications infrastructure providerdelivering high-capacity optical transport solutionsto some of the world's leading brands. The successful candidate must havestrong OTN architecture design experience, provencapacity planning and network dimensioning expertise, and deep knowledge of high-speed optical technologies ( 100G–800G and ROADM architectures).This is a remote role (in Portugal) on a long-term OTN project.PLEASE NOTE - sponsorship cannot be provided. Candidates must live in Portugal with valid rights to work.The Role We are seeking an experienced OTN Design Engineer to support the architecture, planning, and optimisation of high-capacity optical transport networks. This role will focus on designing resilient OTN topologies, performing feasibility studies, and providing expert-level technical guidance across deployment and operational phases.You will work closely with integration teams, operations, and vendors to ensure scalable, future-proof network designs aligned to business and traffic growth requirements.Key Responsibilities Design of OTN network architectures and topologies (metro, core, long-haul) Capacity planning and detailed network dimensioning based on traffic forecasts Definition of engineering standards, design rules, and resiliency models (e.g., ring, mesh, protection schemes) Conducting optical feasibility studies and link budget analysis Technology selection and design validation across -100G / 400G / 800G coherent technologies, ROADM architectures, ZR / ZR+ pluggables Providing technical input for RFP responses and vendor evaluations Reviewing vendor proposals and validating technical compliance Acting as subject matter expert to support integration and operations teams Producing high-quality technical documentation, HLD/LLD and design packsRequired Experience Proven experience designing OTN and DWDM networks Strong understanding of coherent optical transmission systems Experience with high-capacity backbone or metro transport networks Knowledge of resiliency strategies and protection mechanisms Ability to perform link engineering, optical budget calculations and feasibility assessments Experience supporting vendor selection or technical bid evaluationsDesirable Skills Experience with multi-vendor optical environments (e.g. Ciena, Nokia, Huawei, Infinera) Familiarity with SDN-controlled transport networks Understanding of IPoDWDM and data centre interconnect architectures Experience designing for hyperscale or wholesale carrier networks
