It is hereby announced that, at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), for a period of 30 working days from the day following the publication of this notice in the Diário da República, an international documentary competition is open for the recruitment, under an employment contract in public functions, of one position of Assistant Professor in the disciplinary/scientific area of Cultural and Communication Sciences, subarea of Cultural Sciences, under the terms of Articles 37 to 51, 61, and 62-A of the Statute of the University Teaching Career, republished by Decree-Law No. 205/2009 of August 31 (hereinafter referred to as ECDU), and other applicable legislation, namely Regulation No. 106/2019 – General Regulation for the Recruitment Competitions of Full, Associate, and Assistant Professors at UTAD, published in the Diário da República on January 25, 2019.
In addition to duties at UTAD, the hired Assistant Professor must be able to carry out research activities within research units or centers.
The recruited candidate will sign a permanent employment contract in public functions in the category for which this competition is open, with a five-year probationary period.
In accordance with Articles 37 to 51 of the ECDU and other applicable legislation, and Article 8 of the General Regulation for the Recruitment Competitions of Full, Associate, and Assistant Professors at UTAD, hereinafter referred to as the Regulation, the following rules shall apply:
I - RECTOR'S AUTHORIZATION ORDER
This competition was opened by order of the Rector, issued on April 4, 2025, following confirmation of appropriate budget availability and that the job position now announced is foreseen and unoccupied in the university's staff plan, and thus its holder must perform the activities assigned to an Assistant Professor at UTAD, as defined in particular by Article 4 and paragraph 3 of Article 5 of the ECDU.
II - VALIDITY PERIOD
This competition is valid solely for filling the aforementioned job position and expires once it is filled.
III — PLACE OF WORK
IV - ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
IV.1 — Under the terms of Article 41-A of the ECDU, only holders of a Doctoral degree may apply for this competition.
IV.2 — Chapter VI of the Regulation applies regarding the proof and fulfillment of admission requirements and the exclusion of candidates.
IV.3 — If the doctoral degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of August 16, and all formalities must be fulfilled by the application deadline.
IV.4 — Foreign candidates, except those from Portuguese-speaking countries, must demonstrate proficiency in Portuguese, both spoken and written, corresponding to at least level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, with official recognition through a certificate or diploma, by the application deadline.
V - REQUIREMENTS FOR APPROVAL IN ABSOLUTE MERIT
V.1 — Article 10, Chapter III of the Regulation applies regarding the approval of candidates in absolute merit.
V.2 — The admission of candidates is conditional on their approval in absolute merit, which depends on the cumulative fulfillment of the following requirements:
Doctorate in the scientific subarea of Cultural Sciences, such as Cultural Sciences, Cultural Studies, Cultural and Heritage Studies, Cultural Heritage, Digital Cultural Heritage, or similar;
Curriculum compatible with the disciplinary/scientific area of the competition and suitable for the respective category, with emphasis on: Cultural Matrices: Identity and Power; Heritage and Digital Culture Studies; Enhancement, Conservation, and Digitization of Culture and Cultural Heritage; Digital Protection and Management of Heritage;
Publication, in the last five years, of at least three relevant articles or chapters for the competition area, indexed in Scopus and/or Social Sciences Citation Index and/or Arts & Humanities Citation Index.
V.3 — The jury will decide on the approval or rejection of candidates in absolute merit through a justified nominal vote without abstentions, considering approved those who receive a favorable vote from more than half of the voting jury members.
VI - EVALUATION PARAMETERS AND RANKING IN RELATIVE MERIT, RESPECTIVE WEIGHTING, AND FINAL SCORING SYSTEM
VI.1 — This competition aims to assess the candidates’ capability and performance across the various aspects defined in Article 4 and paragraph 3 of Article 5 of the ECDU.
VI.2 — The selection method to be used is curricular evaluation. The jury may conduct public hearings for candidates approved in absolute merit to clarify matters related to the submitted documents, according to Articles 3(5) and 3(6) of the Regulation.
VI.3 — Each parameter of curricular evaluation is scored on a scale from 0 to 100, with the score multiplied by the following weighting factors:
A.1: 30%, A.2: 10%, A.3: 5%, B.1: 20%, B.2: 5%, B.3: 5%, B.4: 5%, C.1: 5%, C.2: 5%, D: 10%
The parameters to be assessed are as follows:
A. Scientific performance
A.1. Scientific production: quality of peer-reviewed scientific publications (journal articles, books, book chapters, papers published in proceedings) in the competition area, notably their impact on the scientific community, evidenced by the reputation of the publication venues and the citations by other authors.
A.2. Recognition by the scientific community in the competition area: editorial and review activities in scientific journals, participation in academic examination juries, participation in scientific and organizational committees of scientific events.
A.3. Coordination, leadership, and promotion of research activity and participation in research units or centers: coordination and participation as a researcher in funded scientific projects, particularly considering funding amounts and competitive bases for funding from national or international agencies; supervision of research grant holders; integration in research centers.
B. Pedagogical ability
B.1. Teaching activity in higher education and pedagogical performance: teaching of curricular units as coordinator or lecturer, especially in Cultural Sciences; Cultural Heritage; Digital Humanities; Sociomuseology; and Territories and Sustainability, considering, where available, the results of pedagogical evaluation.
B.2. Coordination and participation in pedagogical projects: coordination and participation in study cycle coordination bodies, particularly the creation and modification of study cycles and higher education training not leading to a degree, notably in the competition area.
B.3. Pedagogical innovation and enhancement: coordination, promotion, and involvement in initiatives that improved the quality of the teaching/learning process. Quality and quantity of pedagogical and educational publications in Cultural Sciences; Cultural Heritage; Digital Humanities; Sociomuseology; and Territories and Sustainability. Attendance of pedagogical training courses.
B.4. Completed supervision of doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students, especially those within Cultural Sciences; Cultural Heritage; Digital Humanities; Sociomuseology; and Territories and Sustainability.
C. Other relevant activities
C.1. Organization and participation in outreach tasks, scientific dissemination, and socio-economic valorization of knowledge, contributing to the interaction between higher education institutions and society.
C.2. Provision of services by higher education institutions to the scientific and educational community, as well as the economic sector and society in general, particularly considering contracted amounts, where applicable.
D. Scientific/pedagogical project: An original document, up to 4000 words, including:
i. A concise research proposal demonstrating innovation and integration in the state of the art in the competition area;
ii. A strategy for education in the disciplinary area of the competition;
iii. The relationship between scientific and pedagogical components, and both with UTAD’s strategic goals.
VI.4 — If the jury decides to hold public hearings for candidates approved in absolute merit, the following weighting factors apply to the document evaluation (section VI.3) and the public hearing:
b) Public hearing: 20%
VI.5 — According to Article 11(7) of the Regulation, the public hearings will consider the following aspects, in addition to issues related to the documents and curriculum considered relevant:
a) Oral communication skills in English and interpersonal abilities;
b) Motivation and intentions, particularly regarding the development of teaching and research in the subarea of the competition;
c) Depth and breadth of knowledge in cultural sciences, especially cultural heritage and digital culture.
VII - APPLICATION SUBMISSION AND DOCUMENTATION
– Candidates must access and register on the electronic platform https://careers.utad.pt to submit their application, selecting the relevant procedure.
– Applications must be submitted exclusively in digital format, as PDF files.
– The application must include the following documents:
Curriculum vitae, dated and signed, containing all information necessary for evaluation, organized in accordance with the elements and evaluation parameters listed in section VI of the notice;
The curriculum vitae must also explicitly include the 'Scopus Author ID' to identify the list of publications, citation count, and H-index according to Scopus;
Copy of academic certificates;
Scientific/pedagogical project;
Separate copies of the three most relevant publications to verify compliance with item V.2(b) of the notice;
PDF copies of all documents supporting the activities mentioned in the CV, properly identified and organized;
Any other elements the candidate deems relevant for evaluation by the jury.
– If the application includes a classified document that contains commercial, industrial, literary, artistic, or scientific secrets, the candidate must explicitly indicate this. Otherwise, the document will be freely accessible to other candidates during the consultation phase.
– On the electronic platform, candidates must:
Declare, under oath, that they meet the eligibility requirements set out in the notice and in the law and that all the information and documentation included in the application are authentic, without prejudice to subsequent verification;
Consent to receive communications and notifications related to the competition by email, providing the respective address.
VIII - LANGUAGE
All application documents must be submitted in either Portuguese or English.
IX - JURY COMPOSITION
According to Articles 45 and 46 of the ECDU, Article 14 of the Regulation, and the Rectoral Order of May 26, 2025, the jury is composed of the following members:
President (on behalf of the Rector): Professor Carlos da Costa Assunção, Full Professor, President of the School of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.
Members:
Professor Maria Manuel Rocha Teixeira Baptista, Full Professor, University of Aveiro.
Professor Mirian Estela Nogueira Tavares, Full Professor, University of Algarve.
Professor Fernando Alberto Torres Moreira, Full Professor, University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.
If the Jury President is not from the scientific area of the competition, they must, before knowing the candidates' identities or curricula, define the criteria to be used in case of a tie. If not, the following tiebreaking criteria will be used in order:
a) Average of total quantitative scores assigned by the jury members to the tied candidates;
b) Highest score obtained by tied candidates in element A. Scientific Performance;
c) Highest score obtained in element B. Pedagogical Capacity.
