Offer Description

It is hereby announced that, at the School of Arts and Humanities ( SAH ) of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), an international documentary competition is open for the recruitment of 1 (one) Assistant Professor in the disciplinary area of Art History, under a public service employment contract, for a permanent position. The competition will run for 30 business days from the working day following the publication of this notice in the Diário da República. This competition follows the provisions of Articles 37 to 51, and 61 and 62-A of the Statute of the University Teaching Career (referred to as ECDU), republished by Decree-Law No. 205/2009, of August 31, and amended by Law No. 8/2010, of May 13, along with other applicable legislation, including the General Regulations for the recruitment of full, associate, and assistant professors at the University of Lisbon, approved by Rectorial Order of February 16, 2015, and published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 45, by the Order nr. 2307/2015, of March 5 (referred to as the "Regulations").

The recruited candidate will sign an indefinite-term public service employment contract, in the category for which this competition is open, with a probationary period as defined in Article 25 of the ECDU. The competition is specifically aimed at holders of a doctoral degree with high research potential and capability, who wish to enter the university teaching career at the entry level.The decision to launch the present call also complies with the provisions of paragraph 5 of Article 6 of Decree-Law No. 57/2016, of August 29, as amended by Article 2 of Law No. 57/2017, of July 19.

The Joint Order No. 373/2000, of March 31, by the Minister for State Reform and Public Administration and the Minister for Equality, mandates the inclusion of the following statement in recruitment and access competitions: “In compliance with subparagraph h) of Article 9 of the Constitution, the Public Administration, as an employer, actively promotes a policy of equal opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional advancement, taking every precaution to avoid any form of discrimination.”

Therefore, the terms "candidate," "recruited," "professor," and other similar terms are not used in this notice to refer to gender. In compliance with Normative Dispatch No. 18/2019, of June 21, issued under the provisions of Articles 1 and 2 of Article 7 of Law No. 62/2017, of August 1, FLUL fosters a culture of equal opportunities for both women and men.

Likewise, no candidate may be favored, benefited, harmed, or deprived of any right, or exempted from any duty, based on ancestry, age, sexual orientation, marital status, family situation, economic situation, education, social origin or status, genetic heritage, reduced work capacity, disability, chronic illness, nationality, ethnic origin or race, territory of origin, language, religion, political or ideological convictions, or union affiliation.

In accordance with Articles 37 to 51 of the ECDU, and other applicable legislation, as well as the provisions of Article 8 of the Regulations, the following provisions will apply:

1. Authorization Order

The opening of this competition was authorized by the Rector of the University of Lisbon, Professor Luís Manuel dos Anjos Ferreira, on 05 of May of 2025, issued after the cumulative confirmation of the following requirements:

a) Availability of appropriate budgetary allocation;

b) The position being contested is foreseen and unoccupied in the teaching staff planning of the School of Arts and Humanities, and is characterized by the requirement that its holder must carry out teaching and research activities assigned to an Assistant Professor.

2. Place of Work

School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon, located in Alameda da Universidade, 1600‐214 Lisbon, Portugal.

3. General Requirements

3.1. Academic Degree Requirements – To hold a doctoral degree, in accordance with the provisions of Article 41-A of the ECDU.

3.2. Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must possess recognition of the doctoral degree in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, by the deadline set for the signing of the contract.

3.3. The provisions set forth in Chapter VI of the Regulations shall apply regarding the verification and fulfillment of the requirements for the admission and exclusion of candidates.

3.4. Failure to submit any of the documents required for the application, within the specified deadline and under the terms indicated below, will result in the application's rejection. This decision shall be subject to review and determination by the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities prior to the Jury's deliberation on absolute merit.

4. Submission of Applications

4.1. Applications are submitted by email to concursos.docentes@letras.ulisboa.pt within 30 business days following the publication of this notice in the Diário da República. Applications must be accompanied by the following documents, submitted in digital format and in a non-editable format (PDF):

b)Curriculum vitaedetailing the candidate's scientific, pedagogical, and other activities relevant to the mission of the higher education institution, taking into account the criteria outlined in sections 5 and 6 of this Notice.

c) Selected publications as per item c) of section 5 of this Notice;

d) Ascientific-pedagogical project as per section 6.3. of this notice;

4.2. All application materials must be in Portuguese or in English.

5. Requirements for Admission on Absolute Merit

In the first phase, candidates are evaluated based onabsolute merit.

5.1. The admission of candidates based on absolute merit depends on the fulfillment of the following criteria, cumulatively:

a) Holding aPhD in History or in Art History, or an equivalent designation, or having a dissertation topic that falls within this scientific field ;

b) Possession of an overall curriculum from the last five (5) years that the jury deems, with justification, to demonstrate scientific merit and research capability compatible with the disciplinary area for which the competition was opened and appropriate to the respective teaching category;

c) Authorship or co-authorship of chapters of published books (or books) or articles published in journals relevant to the subject area of the competition, preferably published in the last 5 (five) years, excluding works in press or accepted for publication on the closing date of the application period for this competition;

d) Presentation of a scientific-pedagogical project according to the terms of item 6.3. of this Notice.

5.2. A candidate is considered admitted on absolute merit if they are approved by an absolute majority of the voting members of the jury, in a justified nominal vote, where abstentions are not allowed.

6. Evaluation and ranking parameters on relative merit, their respective weighting, and the final scoring system.

Once the candidates are approved based on absolute merit, the evaluation of the relative merit parameters proceeds, based on the ranking criteria, their respective weighting, and the final scoring system identified below, in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 6 of article 50 of the ECDU, paragraph 4 of article 5, and article 11 of the ULisboa Regulations.

* Curriculum assessment (70%);
* Scientific-pedagogical project merit (30%).

6.1. The curriculum evaluation will focus on the following items, considering only those that can be unequivocally associated with the disciplinary area of Art History, with preference given to a background at the intersection between Late Antique and Islamic Art and Studies of Constructive Typologies from the period in question, demonstrating full proficiency in archaeological practice, particularly regarding:

* Education and scientific productivity, considering scientific level, international dissemination and contributions to the field;
* Quality of the research activity, including both scientific results and impact.

6.2. In the curriculum evaluation, the activities carried out by the candidate will be considered in the areas of Scientific Performance (40%),Pedagogical Capacity (20%), and Other activities relevant to the mission of the higher education institution (10%), with preference given to activities conducted in the last 5 (five) years.

6.3.The scientific-pedagogical project, which must be betweensix thousand (6,000)andten thousand (10,000)words, shall consist of the presentation ofone (1) course syllabusin the disciplinary area ofArt History, specificallyLate Antique and Islamic Art, including a clear outline ofcontents, methodologies, and bibliography(30%).

6.4. The assessment components mentioned above must be compatible with the disciplinary area in which the competition is open and appropriate for the position of Assistant Professor.

7. Ranking of Applicants

7.1. In the ranking of candidates for the competition, each jury member ranks the candidates in descending order of their merit, participating in the voting based on their ranked list of candidates.

7.2. According to Article 20 of the Regulation, the jury initially votes for the first place, then for the second place, and so on, until all candidates admitted to the competition and previously approved based on absolute merit are ranked. In each vote, the jury's decisions are made by an absolute majority of votes, and the methodology for ranking the candidates is as outlined in nr. 5 of Article 20 of the Regulation, in compliance with the provisions of Article 17 of the Regulation.

7.3. Upon completion of the application of the evaluation and ranking criteria, the jury proceeds to prepare a final ranked list of candidates.

8. Public hearings

8.1. Whenever deemed necessary, the jury may decide, at its first meeting, to hold public hearings, under equal circumstances, for all candidates approved on absolute merit, which are intended solely to clarify issues related to the documents submitted by the candidates, as per item b) of nr. 4 of Article 50 of the ECDU.

8.2. If these public hearings are required, they will take place between the 20th and 50th day following the jury's meeting for admission based on absolute merit of the candidates. Candidates will be informed at least five days in advance of the date and location of the public hearings.

8.3. In the public hearings, both candidates and jury members may participate via videoconference.

8.4. The jury may also request candidates to submit additional documentation related to the curriculum presented, based on item a) of nr. 4 of Article 50 of the ECDU."

9. Composition of the Jury

According to the provisions of Articles 45 and 46 of the ECDU and Article 14 of the Regulation, the jury is composed of the following members:
