Notice is hereby given that, at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), for a period of 30 working days from the day immediately following the publication of this notice in the Diário da República [the Official Portuguese Government Gazette ], an international call for applications based on academic qualifications is open for the recruitment of a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor, in the disciplinary/scientific area of Management, Sub-area of Management and Administration pursuant to articles 37 to 51, 61 and 62a of the ECDU [ Statute of the University Teaching Career ], as amended by Decree-Law No. 205/2009, of 31 August, and other applicable legislation, namely Regulation no. 106/2019 [ Regulations for applications for the Recruitment of Full, Associate and Assistant Professors at UTAD ] published in the Diário da República on 25 January 2019.
In addition to the duties to be carried out at UTAD, the contracted Assistant Professor must also be able to carry out research activities in research units or centres.
The person recruited will sign a tenure-track public service contract in the category for which this application opened, with a probationary period of five years.
In accordance with articles 37 to 51 of the ECDU and other applicable legislation, and with the provisions of article 8 of the Regulation no. 106/2019, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations, the following rules must be observed:
I - Order of the Rector
This application was opened by Order of the Rector, issued on 24 February 2025, following confirmation of the existence of budgetary appropriations and that the position now being advertised is vacant in the University's staffing plan and specified therein, so that its holder must carry out the activities attributed to an Assistant Professor at UTAD, as defined, in particular, by article 4 and no. 3 of article 5 of the ECDU.
II - Validity of the application
The application is valid only for staffing the above-mentioned position and will end when it is staffed.
III - Place of work
IV - Admission requirements
IV.1 – Pursuant to article 41-A of the ECDU, only those who hold a doctoral degree may be admitted to this application.
IV.2 - The provisions of Chapter VI of the Regulations regarding proof and fulfilment of the requirements for admission and exclusion of candidates must be applied.
IV.3 - If the doctorate was awarded by a foreign educational institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, and the formalities set out therein must be fulfilled by the application deadline.
IV.4 - Candidates of foreign nationality, except those from Portuguese-speaking countries, must have a command of the Portuguese language, spoken and written, corresponding to the minimum common reference level B1, this requirement being officially recognised through a certificate or diploma of proficiency in the Portuguese language following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and issued by the closing date for applications.
V - Requirements for passing in absolute merit
V.1 - The provisions of Article 10, Chapter III of the Regulations apply to assess the absolute merit of candidates.
V.2 - The admission of candidates is conditional on their approval on absolute merit, which depends on the cumulative fulfilment of the following requirements:
a) Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Management or Human Resources Management;
b) Doctoral thesis on the subject of Human Resources Management or Organizational Behaviour;
c) Publication, in the last five years, of at least three articles relevant to the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour, indexed in Scopus in journals classified in any subcategory of the Business, Management and Accounting category.
V.3 - The Jury will decide on the approval or rejection of candidates on absolute merit, by a justified roll-call vote in which abstentions are not allowed, and candidates who obtain the favourable vote of an absolute majority of the voting jurors will be approved.
VI - Parameters and weighting of evaluation and ranking on relative merit, and final evaluation system
VI.1 - The purpose of this competition is to ascertain the ability and the performance of applicants regarding the various features and tasks involved in the position to staff, pursuant to article 4 and article 5 no. 3 of the ECDU.
VI.2 - The selection method to be used is curricular assessment, although the jury may organize public hearings for the candidates approved on absolute merit, to clarify issues related to the documents submitted by the candidates, pursuant to no. 5 and 6 of Article 3 of Regulation 106/2019.
VI.3 - Each curricular assessment parameter is scored on a scale from 0 to 20, with the respective score multiplied by the following weighting factors:

This is the list of parameters to be assessed:
A - Scientific performance
A.1 - Scientific publication: quality of peer-reviewed scientific publications (articles in journals, books, book chapters, conference papers published in proceedings) in the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour, namely the impact on the scientific community, as reflected in the reputation of the publication outlets, citations by other authors and awards received.
A.2 - Recognition by the scientific community in the area for which the application is open: editorial and reviewing activities in scientific journals, participation in juries for academic exams, participation in scientific or organization committees of scientific events.
A.3 - Coordination, leadership and promotion of research activities and participation in research units or centres: coordination and participation as a researcher in funded scientific projects, namely considering the amounts funded and the competitive bases for funding, through national or international agencies; supervision of research fellows; integration in research centres.
B - Pedagogical ability
B.1 - Teaching activity and pedagogical performance in higher education: teaching curricular units, as a professor or lecturer, namely in the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour, considering the results of pedagogical assessments, whenever available.
B.2 - Coordination and participation in pedagogical projects: coordination and participation in coordination bodies for study programmes, with particular consideration given to creating and revising curricula of study programmes and of other higher education training programmes, namely in the area in which the application is open.
B.3 - Pedagogical innovation and valorisation: Coordination, stimulation and involvement in initiatives that have resulted in contributions to improving the quality of the teaching/learning process. Quality and quantity of pedagogical and educational publications in the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour. Attendance at training courses of a pedagogical nature.
B.4 - Completed supervision of doctoral, master’s and undergraduate students, with emphasis on those in the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour.
C. Other relevant activities
C.1 - Organizing and participating in outreach activities, scientific dissemination and the economic and social valorisation of knowledge, helping to enhance the interaction between higher education institutions and society.
C.2 - Provision of services by higher education institutions to the scientific and educational community, as well as the industry and society at large, considering the amounts contracted, when applicable.
D - Scientific/pedagogical project: An original document of no more than 4000 words presenting:
i) A concise research proposal, highlighting its innovativeness and its fit with the state of the art in the area;
ii) A strategy for training in the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour;
iii) The relationship between the scientific and pedagogical components, as well as their relationship with UTAD's strategic objectives.
VI.4 - If the selection board decides to organize public hearings for the candidates approved on absolute merit, the following weighting factors will be assigned to the documentary assessment listed in point VI.3 and to the public hearing:
a) Documentary assessment: 80%
b) Public hearing: 20%
VI.5 – Pursuant to Article 11(7) of the Regulations, the following parameters will be considered at the public hearings of candidates, in addition to questions relating to the documents and curricular items presented in the application that are deemed relevant:
a) Oral expression and interpersonal skills;
b) Motivation and intentions, particularly with regard to the development of teaching and research in the area of Human Resources Management and/or Organizational Behaviour;
c) Depth and breadth of knowledge in the same area.
VII - Submission and instruction of the application
1 - Applicants must access and register on the electronic platform https://careers.utad.pt to submit their application, selecting the procedure they wish to apply for.
2 - Applications must be submitted exclusively in digital format, in portable document format (PDF).
3 - The following documents must be submitted as part of the application:
a) A curriculum vitae, dated and signed, containing the information needed to assess the application, organized in the order and with the denomination of each element and parameter of assessment set out in point VI of the notice;
The curriculum vitae must also explicitly include the ‘Scopus Author ID’, which identifies the list of publications, the number of respective citations and the H-index according to the Scopus source;
b) Copy of qualification certificates;
c) Scientific/pedagogical project;
d) A separate copy of the three most relevant publications, to check compliance with the provisions of point V.2 c of the notice;
e) A copy, in PDF format, of all proof of the activities mentioned in the curriculum vitae, duly identified and organized;
f) Other elements that the candidate considers relevant for the jury’s assessment.
4 - If the application contains a classified document revealing a commercial or industrial secret, or a secret relating to literary, artistic or scientific property, the candidate must expressly indicate this reservation, failing which the work in question will be freely accessible to any of the other candidates when they consult the file.
5 - On the electronic platform, the candidate must:
a) Declare, on their honour, that they meet the admission requirements set out in the notice and in the law and that all the information and documentation included in the application is authentic;
b) Express their consent for communications and notifications within the scope of the application to take place by email, indicating their address.
VIII - Language
Application documents must be submitted in Portuguese or English.

If the Chairperson of the selection board does not belong to the scientific area or field for which this application is open, they must, before knowing the identity of the candidates and their curricula, define the criteria that will be used if called upon to exert tie-breaking powers. If not, they will use the following tie-breaking criteria in the following order until a tie-break is reached:
a) Average total scores awarded by the members of the selection board to the tied candidates;
b) The highest score obtained by the tied candidates in element A. Scientific performance;
c) Highest score obtained by the tied candidates in element B. Pedagogical ability.
