Offer Description

The University of Coimbra has an open call for one Data Steward of the Center of Excellence currently being implemented under “GeneT – The Gene Therapy Center of Excellence”. The GeneT, located in Coimbra,results from a fundedproject between the University of Coimbra, Portugal, the University of Sheffield (UK), andUniversity Eastern Finland, funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe Teaming for Excellence action(DOI: 10.3030/101059981).

The Gene Therapy Center of Excellence - the GeneT - acts as an (inter)national enabler of Gene Therapy research, innovation, manufacturing, and clinical trials located in the Center Region of Portugal, in Coimbra.Within the scope of the European Commission’s Teaming for Excellence action, GeneT has an ambitious 6-year plan to develop its research and innovation activities, Viral-vectors Production, and Clinical trials, with a long-term sustainable strategy.

The selected candidate will play a central role in supporting GeneT’s data management strategy, ensuring high-quality, secure, and FAIR-aligned data practices across research, innovation, and clinical domains.

Scientific Area : Gene Therapy/Research Data Management / Data Stewardship

Objectives/Responsibilities

The Data Steward at GeneT, University of Coimbra, will be responsible for:

* Design and implement data management procedures aligned with FAIR principles.
* Support researchers and technical staff in organizing, documenting, storing, and sharing data.
* Ensure compliance with institutional, national, and EU data policies (e.g., GDPR, Horizon Europe).
* Promote standardised metadata, formats, and ontologies across GeneT's research and innovation activities.
* Provide guidance and training on data management planning, versioning, and repository use.
* Collaborate with IT services, grant offices, and researchers to embed good data practices from project design to publication and long-term preservation.
* Assist in monitoring data quality, availability, and reuse within and beyond the consortium.
* Contribute to internal and external reporting by providing structured data and impact metrics.

Skills/Qualifications

* Degree in Life Sciences, Information Management, Data Science, or related fields (Master’s or equivalent experience).
* Proven experience in research data management, preferably in biomedical, health, or life sciences settings.
* Knowledge of data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR) and research ethics frameworks.
* Familiarity with data repositories, metadata standards, and data curation tools.
* Experience in development and maintenance of informatic platforms for data collection and data management.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to train and support diverse teams.
* Organizational skills and attention to detail, with experience in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments.
* Fluency in Portuguese and proficiency in English are required.

The successful candidate will be hired by the University of Coimbra under a four years full-time work contract, with the possibility of extension or transition to a long-term position depending on performance and institutional needs.

Selection methods

The selection includes Curricular Evaluation (CE; 60%) and Interview (I; 40%)

Selection criteria

Curricular evaluation based on the Curriculum Vitae that must include relevant academic and professional experience, outputs/list of previous data management initiatives and activities, including data management in research projects, development or applying data management plans (DMPs), data standards or repositories, and experience working with researchers, technical teams, IT, or research support services, and other relevant experience, achievements and skills related to the functions that demonstrates the suitability of the candidate’s Profile for the Position and for the mission of GeneT.

The Interview, to which only candidates scoring above the 70 % threshold in the CE evaluation will be invited should also demonstrate knowledge and competencies in data stewardship in Life science and/or Biomedical areas or similar areas and suitability of the candidate’s profile for the position and for the mission of GeneT; Motivation and interest for the position will be also relevant for the position.

About us: GeneT integrates CiBB that includes the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC-UC) and the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR).
