Role Overview
We are seeking a Principal AI Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge AI solutions that power both internal operations and our core products. This role requires deep technical expertise, visionary thinking, and strong leadership capabilities. You will work closely with the EVP of Data Analytics & AI and collaborate across departments to identify opportunities where AI can deliver measurable business impact.
Location Requirement
This position is based in Funchal, Madeira, and candidates must be either currently located in Madeira or willing to relocate.
Key Responsibilities
* Serve as a hands-on technical leader and subject matter expert in AI, machine learning, and applied data science.
* Architect and build Tracer’s AI stack and scalable machine learning infrastructure.
* Partner with product, engineering, and business teams to define and implement impactful AI solutions across departments (e.g., Marketing, Sales, Finance, HR).
* Lead the development of advanced AI-driven features in Tracer products including:
* Anomaly detection in data access behavior
* Intelligent anonymization algorithms
* Synthetic data generation (structured & unstructured)
* Data classification using ML on structured and unstructured formats
* Secure AI methods such as federated learning and machine learning on encrypted data
* Promote and guide the ethical and scalable use of AI across the organization.
* Coach and mentor technical team members and support strategic hiring.
Required Qualifications
* 4+ years of hands-on experience designing and deploying AI/ML solutions in production environments.
* Demonstrated experience with:
* AI libraries and frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, mlflow, xgboost, Spark ML)
* AI/ML platforms (e.g., Databricks, SageMaker, Dataiku, Domino)
* Cloud services and architecture (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
* Kubernetes, Docker, and container repositories
* Snowflake, Redshift, or similar database engines
* Privacy-enhancing technologies (e.g., K-anonymity, Differential Privacy, Homomorphic Encryption, Federated Learning)
* Proven track record of delivering impactful AI projects in large, complex environments.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills to articulate AI initiatives and their business value.
* Ability to drive cultural and strategic alignment in AI adoption across teams.
Education
* Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Applied Mathematics, AI, or a closely related field.
