Position TitleBiochemistry Researcher (R1) – Master Position – NOVA.id.FCT WorkplaceLaboratory of Macromolecular Crystallography, UCIBIO Research Unit, Department of Chemistry, NOVA School of Science and Technology. Supervised by Professor Cristiano Mota and Professor Maria Gabriela Almeida. Fellowship Duration6 months, scheduled to begin July 2026; renewable for the same duration for the duration of the project. ResponsibilitiesWork Plan: Enzyme Selection: Evaluate electrocatalytic activity of redox enzyme variants for arsenic and antimony oxides using direct or mediated electrochemistry to select candidates for biosensor development. Enzyme Immobilisation: Test immobilisation strategies on disposable screen‐printed electrodes with polymeric and nanostructured surface functionalisation; include a 3D‐printed microfluidic component if necessary. Characterisation: Analyse biosensor configuration for analytical performance (sensitivity, LOD, selectivity, stability) and morphological structure in the presence of arsenic and antimony. Validation: Validate arsenic and antimony biosensors using real groundwater samples and compare with HPLC results. RequirementsEducation Level: Master's degree or equivalent in Chemistry or related field. Must be enrolled in a doctorate or non‐degree programme. Mandatory RequirementsEnrollment in a doctorate or non‐degree programme. Master's degree in Chemistry or related fields. Master's final grade equal to or higher than 16 out of 20. Experience in the specific scientific area of the work plan is preferred. Fluent in English. Preferred FactorsExperience in biosensors based on electrochemical transduction techniques (voltammetry, amperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy). Experience in functionalisation of screen‐printed electrodes. Experience in modelling and 3D printing.
