The Opportunity
We're seeking an exceptional Compliance Officer to serve as our designated compliance officer for our Canadian MSB operations on an independent contractor basis. This role can start part-time and grow into a full-time contract as we scale.
This is a rare opportunity to build and shape the compliance function at a growing fintech from the ground up, working directly with leadership and regulators.

What You'll DoRegulatory Compliance & Strategy
Serve as Compliance Officer for our Canadian MSB registration with FINTRAC
Design, implement, and maintain our risk-based AML/ATF compliance program under the PCMLTFA and RPAA
Act as primary liaison with FINTRAC, Bank of Canada, and other Canadian regulators
Monitor regulatory changes and proactively update our compliance framework
Conduct annual risk assessments and lead regulatory examinations
Client & Institutional Onboarding
Establish end-to-end KYC, CDD, and beneficial ownership verification procedures
Implement screening for PEPs, HIOs, and international sanctions lists (UN, Canada, OFAC, EU, UK)
Support our onboarding relationships with banking institutions and payment processors
Prepare due diligence packages and respond to institutional compliance questionnaires
Transaction Monitoring & Reporting
Build and maintain transaction monitoring systems to detect suspicious activities
Investigate flagged transactions and document findings
Prepare and file regulatory reports (STRs, LCTRs, EFTRs, LVCTRs, TPRs) to FINTRAC
Coordinate with banking partners on transaction escalations
Policy Development & Training
Develop comprehensive AML/ATF policies covering all PCMLTFA and RPAA requirements
Create training materials and deliver training to company staff
Ensure policies reflect current regulatory guidance and best practices
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Product Team: Provide compliance requirements for new features; review product designs
Technology Team: Collaborate on system design for compliance automation
Management: Advise on risk management strategy and incident response
What We're Looking ForRequired Experience & Qualifications
Experience serving as Compliance Officer for a Canadian MSB or similar regulated entity
2-3 years minimum compliance experience in banking, fintech, payments, or financial services
Strong understanding of Canadian AML/ATF regulations (PCMLTFA, RPAA, FINTRAC requirements)
Experience with client onboarding, KYC/CDD, and risk assessment
Demonstrated ability to develop policies, procedures, and training materials
Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal) - minimum B2 level, C1 preferred
Comfortable working remotely with distributed teams across timezones
Able to work as an independent contractor in your country of residence
Highly Valued
Experience with transaction monitoring or suspicious activity investigations
Knowledge of international sanctions regimes (UN, OFAC, EU, UK)
Professional certifications (CAMS, ICA, CFE, or equivalent)
Experience in fintech or payments environments
Background working with FINTRAC or Bank of Canada
