Offer Description
A call for applications is now open for one (1) Research Grant (BI) for a student enrolled in a doctoral program to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project "HIDDENCLEaners - Who does the cleaning in Portugal? Intersection of vulnerabilities and occupational risks among cleaning workers in Facility Services" (Ref. **********.ICDT), funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology through national funds, under the following conditions:
1. Research area/s:
Sociology, Psychology, Occupational Safety and Health
2. Admission requirements:
To apply for the research initiation studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:
Master's degree in Sociology, Psychology, Occupational Health or related areas [1]
Be a student enrolled in a doctoral programme in the scientific areas of the competition – requirement to be duly proven at the time of hiring
Not have benefited from a research grant awarded under the terms of the EBI [2]
3. Preferred requirements:
Completion of a master's thesis on topics relevant to the project (e.g. gender, job insecurity, occupational health and safety)
Proven research experience, namely in the construction and implementation of data collection protocols based on different methods of evaluation and data collection (e.g. questionnaires, interviews, observation)
Basic skills in building and managing quantitative databases and knowledge of basic statistical analysis methodologies
Experience in conducting and analysing qualitative interview data
Proficient command of written and spoken English
4. Work Plan:
4.1.
The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:
Research activities, organisation and systematic review of the literature, with the support of the PRISMA protocol
Collaboration in the conceptualisation of qualitative and quantitative studies to be developed
Participation in the organisation of fieldwork, including the administration of a national survey and conducting interviews
Construction and management of quantitative and qualitative databases
Conducting statistical data analysis and content analysis of interviews
Drafting scientific documents (e.g., reports, scientific articles)
Collaboration in the preparation of content to be included in the digital tools produced by the project (e.g. videos, digital platform)
Collaborating in dissemination activities, namely communications at scientific events and within the community
Support in general tasks related to the organisation and management of the project, such as liaising with the research team, contacting and recruiting participants, requesting authorisations, ethical research protocol, archiving and organising the information collected
Collaboration in the general activities of the research group whenever appropriate
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations
:
The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulations - approved by Regulation no. ********, published in
Diário da República
, 2.a Série, n.
43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulation no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. ******, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. *******, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. ********, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.
6. Workplace
:
The work plan will be developed at the Institute of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, under the scientific guidance of Professor Maria Isabel Correia Dias and Professor Marisa Matias Carvalho Silva.
7. Duration
:
The research grant will last for 12 months, starting in February ****, on a full-time basis, and may be renewed after a positive evaluation, in accordance with institutional needs, up to the end of the work plan or funding period, and may not, under any circumstances, exceed the limits defined in Regulation No. ******** for the type of grant in question.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount
:
8.1.
The monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to €1,******, in accordance with Annex I of Regulation No. ********, updated by Rector's Order No.
GR11/02/2025 of February 19, ****, which amends the value of research scholarships at the University of Porto for the year ****.
8.2.
Payment will be made by FLUP by bank transfer.
In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3.
The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.
9. Evaluation methods
:
9.1.
The selection methods are as follows: curricular assessment (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 70% and, optionally, complemented by an interview (ENT – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 30%, which will only take place when the Jury considers that the AC does not allow it to clarify, in the intended manner, the real competences of the candidates or to distinguish which candidate is best suited to the position and functions to be performed.
If this is the case, the interview will be carried out with the 3 (three) candidates best classified in the AC.
9.2.
Each member of the Jury will assess the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3.
The criteria and weighting factors for the curricular assessment (AC) are:
Academic background: Master\'s degree in Sociology, Psychology, Occupational Safety and Health (up to 10 points); Master\'s degree in another related area (up to 5 points);
Master\'s thesis topic: Aligned with the project topics (up to 3 points); not aligned with the project topics (1 point);
Master\'s degree course average: higher than or equal to 16 points out of 20 (2 points); higher than or equal to 14 points out of 20 (1 point); lower than 14 points out of 20 (0 points);
Scientific publications and communications: at least 1 article in an international or national journal (up to 3 points); at least 1 article in national or international conference proceedings (2 points); at least 1 oral communication or poster at a national or international conference (1 point); no articles, proceedings or oral communication and poster (0 points);
Relevant experience in scientific research: experience in qualitative and quantitative studies (up to 2 points); experience in qualitative or quantitative studies (up to 1 point); no experience (0 points).
9.4.
The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should it be held:
Ability to express oneself and verbal fluency in Portuguese and English (0 to 5 points);
Specific knowledge for the overall implementation of the work plan (0 to 15 points).
9.5.
The candidates may ask the President of the Jury to authorize their interview to be conducted by videoconference, stating the reasons for this.
9.6.
Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawing from the competition, and applicants will be excluded from the competition.
9.7.
The Final Classification (CF - abbreviation in Portuguese ) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0,70*AC) + (0,30*ENT).
9.8.
This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy indicated.
In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they have the profile required to fulfil the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the position.

1st effective member – Professor Marisa Matias, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto;
2nd effective member –Professor João Santos Baptista, Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto;
Substitute member– Professor Marta Santos, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Porto;
Substitute member– Professor José Manuel Pereira Azevedo, Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto.
11. Submission of applications
:
11.1.
Applications must be submitted by 10 th February, **** (local time – Lisbon).
11.2.
Applications must be formalized in the online application submission system, available on the APPLY website: Ref. **********.ICDT
11.3.
The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
Letter of motivation, indicating availability to start the work plan.
The Letter of Motivation should preferably be written in English;
Copy of the certificate(s) of the required qualifications and
Recognition of the degree if it was obtained at a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted until the moment of hiring);
Proof of enrollment in a doctoral program, a requirement that must be duly proven at the time of hiring.
Declaration of eligibility (attached).
11.4.
The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.
11.5.
Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in pointsa)
b)
c)to f) of paragraph 11.3.
will result in the application being excluded.
11.6.
The documents mentioned in point 11.3.
should preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.7.
The Jury may, whenever it deems it necessary, ask applicants to submit additional documents relating to the facts mentioned in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this, in the following terms:
the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required by this Notice;
all applicants are informed that additional documentation has been requested.
False statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.
13. Notification of results:
13.1.
All notifications under this procedure shall be made by email, through the APPLY platform.
13.2.
Notifications shall be made by email, in accordance with Articles 112(1)
(c) and 113(5) of the Administrative Procedure Code.
13.3.
Pursuant to the provisions of Article 121 et seq.
of the Administrative Procedure Code, after being notified, candidates have 10 working days to respond in writing.
14. Reserve list:
A reserve list will be drawn up based on the final ranking list, which can be used if the first-placed applicant withdraws.
The faculty's highest authority reserves the right to call the next applicant, and so on, until the vacancy is filled.
This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 (twelve) months from the date of the publication of this Notice.
