Canonical is hiring a Python Software Engineer to join the Certification team, which develops tools to ensure that various devices such as desktops, laptops, servers, and IoT devices are functioning properly. The team operates at the intersection of hardware and software, so familiarity with hardware as a Python developer is ideal.

The Certification team creates tools for certifying hardware compatibility with Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Desktop, and Server :

This role offers an opportunity to impact Linux adoption across multiple device categories and industries. Canonical provides a dynamic, fast-paced environment with opportunities for learning and growth. The team primarily operates in EMEA time zones, collaborating with colleagues in the Americas and APAC.

We work closely with silicon companies, OEMs, ODMs, and internal teams to ensure a seamless, secure out-of-the-box Ubuntu experience. Success in this role contributes to expanding Ubuntu's presence on more devices.

Role Description

We seek a self-motivated software engineer experienced in Python to develop test automation tools or work with Linux-based embedded hardware. This position offers a chance to advance Linux hardware testing capabilities, scale certification efforts, and enhance test coverage.

The responsibilities include developing and maintaining Canonical's open-source certification tools, creating hardware solutions for test automation, and improving existing processes. The goal is to continuously enhance testing tools and processes to improve the Linux experience for millions of users.

Key Responsibilities

1. Maintain and develop features for Python-based test automation tools like Checkbox, used internally and by industry partners.

2. Innovate ways to enable remote, automated testing.

3. Develop software to complement in-house testing hardware for device features such as graphics, hotplug, and Bluetooth.

4. Write functional and performance tests to support hardware enablement and prevent regressions.

5. Participate in international meetings, with travel 2-3 times per year.

Required Skills and Experience

* Proficiency in Python programming.
* A quality-oriented, pragmatic approach to software design and implementation.
* Interest in test automation methodologies.
* Experience working with Ubuntu or other Linux distributions.
* Ability to work productively in a globally distributed team.

Desired Skills and Experience

* Passion for tinkering and making.
* Hardware testing experience, especially in IoT.
* Familiarity with C programming language.
