Associate Researcher - Applied Mathematics
Marie Curie PhD opportunity with an exciting Bioinformatics/Computer Science workplan for non-human forensics at the University of Porto, Portugal
Join a groundbreaking international network, NATURAL TRACES, focused on the cutting-edge analysis of non-human biological traces in forensics. This Marie Skłodowska-Curie program brings together academia, forensic laboratories, and scientific police forces across several countries to train 10 PhD candidates. https://naturaltraces.com/
As a PhD candidate at the University of Porto within this network, you will contribute to advancing the understanding and application of biological evidence found at crime scenes, including environmental DNA and microbial traces, using innovative computational and statistical approaches. This project aims to develop practical forensic tools and methodologies that significantly improve the analysis of non-human forensic evidence, ultimately supporting justice and truth.
The challenge & our approach: Microbiome analysis has great potential for forensic science, but current methods struggle with large datasets. NATURAL TRACES proposes leveraging Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Bayesian Analysis to develop novel algorithms and software for microbiome data comparison and mixture analysis. We will use diverse datasets, including eDNA, soil, and macroscopic traces, and generate synthetic data with GANs to overcome current limitations.
This is a unique opportunity to work with leading researchers, receive mentorship, and collaborate across an international consortium. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, funding for travel and workshops, and support for publishing and presenting your research at international venues.
Supervision will be provided by Pedro Ferreira and myself.
